Cocktail Calorie War: Skinny Sippers v Huge Hitters
Just like the rest of the UK, cocktails are counting calories. Traditional drinks like the Cosmopolitan, Margarita and Martini are being reinvented all over the country.
The goal for most is to maintain or improve upon flavour while cutting calories by half or more - ending up anywhere in the 99 to 200 calorie range.

Even cocktail mixers are counting the calories
With this in mind Après London has vouched to become the first London-based cocktail bar to create two interchangeable menus comprised of Low-cal and High-cal cocktails.
Coined “Skinny Sippers vs Huge Hitters” , the menus have just been successfully launched and have promised to shake up the happy hour slot and offer consumers the chance to have healthy or mischievous options depending on mood and appetite.
With the main emphasis on the Skinny Sippers the low-calorie cocktail selection offers women and men alike a stress and guilt-free way to enjoy the drinks they have always loved; without the fear of piling on the pounds, in the run up to the summer months.
Easily prepared at home; all of these drinks are appropriate for a dinner or cocktail party, and use common, simple ingredients that can easily be purchased from local convenient stores and supermarkets.
Calorie counts have been derived and calculated by head mixologist Jez Hewitt who says: “Using the simple principle of removing sugar and carbohydrates traces from the cocktails and then labelling them Low-cal was just too easy; and a route I wanted to avoid. Instead I focused more on using ingredients that were naturally sweet or bitter and played with compliments to help infuse and create new refreshing tastes.”
Skinny Sippers Vs Huge Hitters at Après London runs until May 31.
Après Lounge and Cocktail Bar is open Monday – Saturday from 5.00pm –Late, Daily and is located at 31 Duke street, London W1U 1LG.
